Capturing the early moments of your newborn’s life is a precious and irreplaceable way to preserve those fleeting memories. Professional newborn photography allows you to create stunning images that you’ll treasure for years to come. But when is the best time to schedule a newborn photoshoot at our Vancouver newborn photo studio? Let’s explore the ideal timeframe for capturing those beautiful images.

The Sweet Spot: 6-14 Days Old
The optimal window for newborn photography is typically when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. During this time, babies tend to be sleepier and easier to settle into adorable poses. They still retain their curled-up, womb-like positions, making it easier for photographers to capture those iconic newborn shots.
At this stage, newborns are generally more flexible and less prone to startle reflexes, which allows for smoother posing and positioning. Additionally, their delicate features, such as tiny fingers and toes, are still incredibly soft and beautifully preserved. By scheduling a photoshoot during this period, you can capture your baby’s delicate and angelic essence.

Before the Sweet Spot: Fresh 48 Sessions
While the 5-14 day timeframe is ideal for more posed newborn photography, another option to consider is a “Fresh 48” session. These sessions take place within the first 48 hours after birth, either in the hospital or at home. Fresh 48 sessions capture the raw, intimate moments of your newborn’s earliest days, showcasing the family’s joy and connection.
These sessions are a wonderful way to document the first interactions between siblings, parents, and the newborn. Photographers focus on capturing the emotions, tiny details, and tender moments that make these initial hours so special. Fresh 48 sessions provide a candid and authentic glimpse into the very beginning of your baby’s journey.

After the Sweet Spot: Older Newborn Sessions
While the 5-14 day period is considered the sweet spot for newborn photography, it’s still possible to schedule sessions for older newborns. Babies grow and change so quickly, and even if you missed the optimal timeframe, it’s never too late to capture their unique personality and beauty.
Older newborn sessions are typically scheduled for babies between 15 days and 2 months old. During this time, your baby may be more alert and responsive, providing opportunities for capturing their budding personality and engaging expressions. Older newborn sessions often focus on capturing the interactions between the baby and family members, showcasing the love and connection that has developed over the first few weeks.

Discovering the Ideal Time of Day
Now, you may be wondering about the optimal time of day for a newborn photoshoot. Based on my experience, mid to late morning, specifically between 9 am and 12 noon, tends to be the best time. By this period, babies have typically been fed and settled down for a nap.
Since capturing creative poses relies on the baby’s slumber, scheduling the photoshoot after feeding is crucial. Suppose your baby wakes up between 5 am and 7 am. In that case, their subsequent feeding will likely occur around 8 am to 10 am for a three-hour feeding interval or 9 am to 11 am for a four-hour feeding interval.
Don’t fret if your baby happens to be wide awake during the photo session. I possess an array of tips and tricks to calm and settle even the fussiest of awake babies. Ultimately, I strive to deliver the most stunning images that will bring joy to both mummy and daddy.
If you have a due date in mind, feel free to get in touch, and we can discuss booking you in at the optimal time for newborn photos. To secure your spot and avoid disappointment, make sure to book early, as time slots are limited.
