It’s always exciting for a maternity photographer to try new ways to reflect the beauty of this amazing stage in a woman’s life.
I’ve recently had a beautiful session with a gorgeous mom-to-be. She wanted a part of our session to be a milk bath. Milk bath photography is a trend of 2018 so why not jump in. 🙂

I’d love to share not only the gorgeous results that I had when I was creating this Vancouver milk bath photography session but also some tips for photographers.
Lighting was number one that I’ve started to think about. I wanted soft images rather than contrasty. One small window with natural light was not enough and gave harsh shadows. I brought my Einstein by Paul C Buff with an umbrella and shot through. It gave me the exact light I was looking for. Creamy and even. Here is the backstage photo of my setup.
Of course you do not need a whole bath of milk for milk bath photography. I used 2 gallons of milk and it was just perfect.
Here is a creative part and works differently for every artist. Together with my pregnant mama we wanted greens. I also wanted to add some silk flowers. My choice for greens was fern. It’s a symbol of wealth, health and strength in slavic traditions.
The fern worked beautifully for the milk bath. It floated and showed nicely. However, the silk flowers didn’t pass the test. They all drowned. And that’s fine. It was just an option. I think fresh flowers could work. Next time I’ll try. 🙂
The best outfit for me was just a piece of fabric. I used tulle and lace. Simple and sweet, not drawing the attention from the main object.
Those who do not have a bright bathroom with big windows – do not give up. Our session took place at a client’s home in a regular bath. Moreover, there was a glass wall separating the bath and the room. However, I managed to work around it. A view from above and a side view are just enough.
Good luck creating unique and beautiful milk bath maternity photography sessions for your future mamas!
